Assignments in Time

Continued:

Dan just smiled and reminded me. “Son, there is no condemnation. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free... from the law of sin and death…You know this.” I bowed my head. I didn't feel free.                                       

Dan encouraged me. “Why are you leading? Because He called you to it. You are very effective and making a difference. The men really love hearing how God is moving. It helps open them up and share their lives. These guys are changing for the good.”                          

“Thanks, but I have a hard time believing those words. My life is a mess. But let me continue…”.  I said.

By 38, I had attained what others hoped for. At work, decisions had to be made. I had been ranked number 1 in sales for many years. Sometimes I had to look the other way. After all, business was business. Compromise was part of the game… Or so I thought…

“Can we talk, it’s really important…” My wife asked me. “Yeah, sure.  What’s up?”  I said as we laid in bed. I was staring at my phone.

“You know the kids and I…” “Huh…what about them?”  I said as I scrolled through my work email. I was already thinking of tomorrow's events. “You’re not even listening to me, you never do anymore…You don’t even know what’s going on with us…” She said.

She sighed and turned over on her side.

“I try to listen to you but I sometimes feel you don’t understand what’s going on with me. I’m sorry.” I said defensively.

She was already sleeping. Now she didn’t hear me. As I laid there wide awake still, I looked over at her. I had said I was listening, and really wasn’t. She had dropped off to sleep, already gently snoring. I began reflecting and found hot tears well up.  I pulled out a tissue and blew my nose quietly.

“I barely ever really listen to her.” I thought.

”When did it all change? Lord, I’m pathetic. I can’t be like this anymore.”  I heard a whisper as I drifted into a needed heavy sleep.                                                                  “I am the Word, and I’ve been waiting for you…”.

   “So how are you and your wife getting along now?” Dan asked.                                                    “Not great, yet. But  I’ll get to that. Thanks for hearing me out.” I answered.

CHAPTER 2

I was at my desk at work when my supervisor stopped by. 

“Mr Scribner, what happened with the Blatmuth national account?”  I looked at him steadily, knowing he hated this confrontation. I found myself sweating and short of breath.                                                  “They called accounts receivable and settled up. Said it was their last order. Word has already gotten to upper management. I hate to say this, but you are in deep trouble  with this one.”                                                            I sighed and thought. “What else?”           “You have always led the branch in sales. I’m afraid that won’t be the case now. What’s going on with you?” He asked.

I shrugged my shoulders. I had seen others go through this over the years. I hadn’t thought it would ever be me. I should have mentioned to him last month that this client would probably do this.  Maybe I  didn't want to admit that I had lost my touch. The small account losses  could be explained away. But this?… 

“I have to put this warning in writing, sorry guy.” he said.  He was a friend and I knew he hated  this part of his job.  Account losses created a mess, full of lengthy explanations, documentations and examinations that I had a hard time formulating, let alone go through. He finished talking and walked into his office.

“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in  his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor  so that you will be able to stand firm against  all strategies of the devil. For we are not  fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the  unseen world, against mighty powers in this  dark world, and against evil spirits in the  heavenly places.”    

The dark arch lord finished reading the passage and then addressed his comrades. "I know you've all heard this rhetoric before," he said. "I'm reading it to remind you what the enemy considers us. They don’t believe that we are really helping mankind. We know that we help them understand who is truly the deceiver."

A loud murmuring of approval filled the auditorium. "So can I please have everyone's attention?" the arch lord shouted. "I want everyone's attention, hush up the clamor NOW.”

The ruckus died down. "What is wrong with this boardroom's acoustics?" the arch lord asked. "This is our new building. As you all know, our master has been successful at changing the timeline."

He repeated himself and the cheers echoed. "Can you hear me through this distortion?" The arch prince addressed his comrades.

"Yes, my lord," they replied in unison.

"Good," the arch lord said. "Now, as you know, we have a lot of work to do. The enemy is strong, but we are stronger. We will not rest until he is defeated and mankind is free from his lies."

The arch lord's comrades cheered again. "For the master!" they cried.

"For the master!" the arch lord echoed.
