JOSEPH
2- Dreams come and he is mocked by his brothers when he excitedly shares them his dreams. His brothers are jealous and tired of this brother. They hatch a plan…Meanwhile Jacob ( Israel) has no idea…
One night Joseph had a dream,
Excitedly he told us all its theme
And when he said of all that was in store
So many of his family
Hated him all the more
For that morning he had said and told us
Behold, after binding sheaves of grain
While in the field my bundle arose
And stood upright as pretty as a rose
And behold, your sheaves came around
For they bowed down to the ground
To my bundle of grain so sound
Sheaves of grain field surrounded by 1 sheave
So, over us, you are indeed to reign?
Ha ha ha!
They mocked at him in disdain
And over us are you indeed to rule?
They began to be insulting and cruel
And hated him even more,
With a fake bow and taunt for many a score
For his dreams and for his word
They sounded so absurd
Then to add to it, on another day
He dreamed another crazy dream
He told it to his brothers and said I seem
To have dreamed another, dear brothers
Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars Were bowing down to me from afar!
—
When I heard this I rebuked him for the story
Boy, are you looking to claim
All of our families glory?
From this lordly dream
That might rather sound
More like a scheme?
I didn’t understand it then
Of Gods provision and mighty hand
But my sons were sore jealous of him,
They felt like he was from a different kind
I never forgot and kept the saying in mind.
THE DECEPTION
Now one day his brothers
Went to the land of my flocks herd
And I became very concerned
For their safety, I know it sounds absurd
But I became stirred and annoyed
It was to Shechem that I sent the boys
So I asked Joseph to check on them
And he was willingly off to wander
When a man came to him with a ponder
I was sent by my father
To watch over my brothers
We are from the Valley of Hebron,
And I have sought to be in Shechem.
So when this man found me
I was wandering in the fields.
And the man asked me
Boy, just why are you out here?
This place can lurk danger very near
And what are you seeking to yield
In this busy field?
I am seeking just my brothers, no others
Tell me, please, where they are
I’m afraid I’ve gone too far
From where they are pasturing their flock
I should not even be taking the time to talk
The man replied: They have gone away,
For I had heard them say
Let us go to Dothan
And I, Joseph thought…
What were they thinking?
What a notion
This would cause Father undue commotion
So I went after my brothers
And they indeed had their druthers
For when I found them
They did see me with disdain,
And from afar…
—
Yeah, we saw his wave
From the punk, the star
Though the knave did have
A lot of spunk and spitfire
But did we bow too late?
For we then devised a plan to eliminate
And we said to one another
Here comes our ruler, our mighty brother
What shall we do with this dreamer?
So we became the mighty schemer…
Come now, let us kill him as we see fit
And throw him into one of these pits.
Then we will say that a fierce
Animal has devoured him to pieces and bit
Then all will see…
For such was our jealousy
But how could this even be?
What now will become of his dreams?
We did not care, for we were blind you see
But when Reuben heard this
It all seemed so cruel and mean
He would rescue him out of their hands,
Let us not take his life in our Fathers land
We cannot shed his blood;
So rather lets throw him into this pit
Here in the wilderness, what can come of it?
Do not lay a hand on him, I pray
For he then did hatch a plan
To rescue him back that day
And restore him back to our dad
He could rightly see
That this foolishness
Could only come to bad
THE BETRAYAL
So when Joseph came to probe
They stripped him of his robe,
The one of many colors that he wore.
So dashing and royal for sure
And they took him and
Then threw him into the pit.
The well was empty;
For there was no water in it.
Then while we were eating
Looking up with a greeting
We saw a caravan of merchants
Coming up from Gilead with many servants
Also with their camels bearing,
Spices of gum, balm, and myrrh,
While faring their way down to Egypt.
Then I, Judah said: What profit
Will it be to kill our own kin?
And hide his shed blood?
I thought and then said with a grin…
to be continued….
Now read with me in Genesis:
“And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves came round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed yet a dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars made obeisance to me. And he told it to his father, and to his brethren; and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind. And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. And Israel said unto Joseph, Are not thy brethren feeding the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I. And he said to him, Go now, see whether it is well with thy brethren, and well with the flock; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? And he said, I am seeking my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they are feeding the flock. And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, An evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, Let us not take his life. And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him: that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father. And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him; and they took him, and cast him into the pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.“And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brethren hearkened unto him.”

Here is a great video on the story of Joseph:

One of my favorite stories in the Bible. Loved listening to this version.
This is so good!! I love how you wove this story into a poem! It brought it so to life!
